IXIA

A genus of about 50 species from the Winter rainfall regions of South Africa, all grow through the Winter and Spring and are dormant over the Summer months. They produce many star shaped blooms on long wiry stems above reed like foliage. Blooms normally close up in the evening and reopen with the morning sun. Plant in a well drained sunny position enriched with complete fertiliser and lime.  They require plenty of water from when growth begins and then can be kept dry at the end of their growing season.  Protect from frost during the Winter months. Ixia viridiflora being the most spectacular and desirable of all Ixias.
