PLEIONE

A small genus of miniature orchids, resembling Cattleyas from Southern and Eastern Asia.  The name ‘Pleione’ comes from Greek Mythology as ‘Pleione’ was Atlas’s Wife. They have a globose pseudo bulb that produce 1 to 2 deciduous leaves. The large ‘Cattleya’ like blooms emerge from the base of the bulb with new growth, mostly in Spring.  They thrive in partly shaded borders or in woodlands with humus rich soil. We find they grow well in a well drained general potting mix and haven’t needed a special orchid mix. Keep pseudo bulbs cool and protected from heavy frosts in Winter. They require moisture during their growing season and are heavy feeders on the rich ‘smelly’ side. A truly beautiful member of the orchid family.
