An amazing genus of around 21 tuberous species from the Primulaceae family. Native to the woodlands and rocky screes of Europe, the Mediterranean Basin through the Caucasus and Iran these little gems will tolerate a colder Winter and afternoon shade. Most gardeners are familiar with the 'blowsy' florist hybrids of C.persicum but there is so much more to a garden grown species. Tubers should be planted just under the surface in a humus rich soil. Ideally left to naturalise they will flourish year after year. There is not much better than C.coum to give you a splash of colour through the most bleak Winter months. Well worth a try in our cooler climates.
