TIGRIDIA

Commonly called 'Jockey's Caps' this genus of bulbous plants belongs to the iridaceae family. There are about 35 different species in the genus found from Mexico to Chile. The flowers are short lived but more follow regularly. Depending on the species the showy 3 petaled flowers range from 5cm to 15cm across in a wide range of colors from brown through red and pure white. The Aztecs were said to have eaten the roots as a vegetable and the Native American Indians suggest the tubers have a 'chestnut flavour' when cooked. A sunny well drained aspect with a dry Winter rest essential.
