The genus was name in honour of 'Lysimachus' an ancient Sicilian King. These herbaceous and evergreen perennials are members of the Priumlaceae family and are mostly native to the temperature and sub-tropical regions of the Northern hemisphere, with most of the species found in China. Flowering from late Spring through into Summer they are generally white or yellow but some of the rarer species can be pink or purple.
They prefer slightly acidic humus rich soil in sun or partial shade.
