This genus of low growing perennials from mainly the temperate regions of Asia (some into Mediterranean) contains 40 species. Hybridisation has seen numerous cultivars developed as this great little perennial gains its proper popularity. The very attractive foliage is made up of elegant heart shaped leaflets and flowers spikes emerge above with dainty clusters of ‘spurred’ flowers. Flowering is from late Spring into early Summer. They are ideal in a well drained, woodland or shady aspect with many tolerating dry conditions however will flourish with water during their growing season. Remove old foliage at the end of Winter to promote a better foliage display in the Spring, top dress with blood and bone.
