The genus Roscoea has about 20 species of herbaceous perennial flowering plants from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) named in honour of botanist William Roscoe.
Coming mainly from the Himalayan region these gems are noted for their striking flowers and unique adaptation to cooler mountainous environments, unlike most tropical gingers.
Roscoea flowers have a structure often resembling orchids, which makes them intriguing to those gardeners that want something different.
They love a moist well drained humus rich soil with afternoon shade. A true delight and one very favoured genus with us.
Maybe harmful if ingested
