Well known and loved genus of about 500 species that includes annuals and perennials. They are mainly found in North America, The Andes and Japan but extend to the temperate regions of the world, which includes the Australian native violet. Mostly they are creeping or rhizomatous plants which can be deciduous or evergreen. Many have very attractive kidney or heart shaped leaves. The love a compost enriched, well drained semi-shaded spot to protect from hot afternoon sun. They like to be kept damp but not wet, water once a week during Summer. Ideal for planting in woodland beds.
