BABIANA

A genus of approximately 80 species belonging to the Iridaceae family. The majority of the species are endemic to the Cape Provinces of South Africa, especially Namaqualand. Many of these species are now endangered because the rich fertile soils they are found in are now under cultivation. Grown for their long lasting, scented and strikingly coloured flowers this genus brings a wonderful brightness to Spring and early Summer. Well drained sunny position.

The genus name was derived from a Dutch word ‘baviaan’ which referred to the baboons that found the corms nice to eat.

Available January-March
