Members of the Iris Family, they have now been included in the genus ‘Freesia’. They are bulbous plants native to Africa, with most of the species being located in South Africa. They have ‘grass-like’ ribbed foliage with flower stems bearing starry six petalled blooms over a long period.  They are mostly red, white or green with darker markings in the throat. Most are easy to grow requiring a well drained sunny position with complete fertiliser and lime. They need protection from frost in colder areas to avoid damage  to flowers and foliage.  A top dress with ‘Dynamic Lifter’ when growth starts is beneficial and they all require a dry rest period over Summer dormancy.
