A genus of 100 plus species from the more tropical areas of Asia and Africa belonging to the Arum family. The literal translation of the botanical name is ‘deformed penis’. The flower structure is much like other aroids with an encircling spathe however the emerging spadix on “Amorphophallus is usually “knob-like” and is the source of the often foul smell.

The most famous species of Amorphophallus being A.titanum, as large as 2 metres or more across. Many may have seen this extremely impressive piece of nature at Victoria’s Botanical Gardens or in the Kew Gardens England.

A more humid or semi-tropical position with morning sun and frost protection would greatly benefit this genus.

While dormant over winter tubers should be kept dry to avoid rot.
