These members of the Amaryllis family have a genus of 8 bulbous species native to the Mediterranean basin, Central and West Asia and are named in honour of ‘Count Sternberg’, a German botanist. Mostly they have yellow ‘crocus like’ blooms that emerge in the Autumn following Summer rains. The exception being the rare S.candida from Turkey that has white blooms and flowers early Spring. The deep green foliage begins to emerge with flowering and continues to grow long after flowering. Plant in a well-drained sunny spot with a small amount of complete fertiliser. Best left undisturbed for several years. Normal Spring rains are generally adequate. A glowing addition to any Autumn garden.
Available January to March
