This much sought after 'Crown Imperial Fritillaria' is native to a wide range from Kurdistan and Iraq through Pakistan to the foothills of the Himalaya. On stems up to a metre it bears glossy lanceolate leaves in perfect whorls climaxing with several large pendant bells of glowing orange crowned with a tuft of leaves. Inside the bells is a prominent white and green nectary that resembles 'tear drops'.  Although has been in cultivation for more 400 years it is rarely seen here in Australia. Bulbs are best planted on their side (to a depth of 15cm) due to the hole left in the middle of the bulb from the previous season's stem. A small layer of gravel will help with drainage.  They love a feed of lime and blood and bone, liquid fertilise during growth also is a benefit. Although they emit a 'foxy' odour it does little to detract from the sheer beauty and majestic nature of this amazing plant.  Mother Nature truly on her game!!
